The nonfiction prompts are perfect for getting my reluctant writer to start a paragraph without staring at a blank page. We’ve already used them three times this week, and each roll gives us a fresh topic that keeps the ideas flowing.

My third graders actually fight over who gets to roll the storytelling cube first during free write time. The nonfiction prompts have been surprisingly good for getting them to structure facts instead of just making things up.

I was skeptical my third graders would actually use them independently, but rolling the cubes as a warm-up got even my quietest kid talking about nonfiction facts. The six sides give enough variety for a whole week of writing centers, and they're compact enough to toss in a pencil box.
